The Škoda Octavia has proven a pivotal model in the manufacturer’s portfolio. Since its debut as a hatchback it’s been the brand’s biggest-selling car, appealing to any driver with a remotely keen eye on value and practicality.

Over the years, Škoda has pushed the Octavia steadily upmarket. The departure from its budget roots was risky, but it’s a gamble that’s paid off by orders of magnitude—the Octavia’s now so well regarded it rivals premium family cars like the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class, as well as more mainstream models like the Ford Focus, SEAT Leon, VW Golf and Toyota Corolla.

In keeping with its long-term upwardly mobile trajectory, the latest iteration of the Octavia has introduced an upgraded suite of driver tech, not to mention plusher interiors and a sharper look than ever. It shares underpinnings with the Golf, yet notably Škoda has increased the distance between the front and rear axles to add passenger space.

Equipment, options and extras

Our favourite trim is easily the mid-spec SE Technology, by virtue of its outstanding value for money: it’s barely pricier than the entry-level SE, yet benefits from front parking sensors and more advanced infotainment. To be clear, though, the SE is still well equipped, bringing 16in alloy wheels, keyless start, dual-zone climate control, heated door mirrors, automatic lights and wipers—and even an umbrella in the door.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The hierarchy of the Octavia’s models diverges somewhat from Škoda’s norm. The standard SE variant is still there, but with the Octavia the SE is actually the entry point.

The SE technology is great value compared to rivals the Ford Focus and SEAT Leon, and even the range-topping SE L will set you back considerably less than equivalent premium models like the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. And remember that the plugin hybrid iV is available only in the upper trims—although even then its price is competitive against other plugin hybrids.

Škoda has long been known to offer generous deposit contributions, so you can expect a competitive monthly PCP finance rate, except if you want the business-oriented SE Technology model. Meanwhile, insurance costs for the Octavia sit between those of its rivals the Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. The Octavia’s CO2 emissions are in line with those of the Focus, but not as good as those of the hybrid Corolla.

Finally, company car drivers would be advised to try the plugin hybrid iV model, as it sits in one of the cheapest BIK tax bands for anything other than a fully electric car. The iV takes 6 hours to charge from empty to 100% from a three-pin plug, and 3 hours from a 7kW home wall box.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP awarded the Ocativa a full five stars for safety, and found it better at protecting adult occupants in a crash than its competitor the Ford Focus. The Toyota Corolla scored better than both for side-impact protection, but not as well as the Octavia for front impact.

All versions of the Octavia come with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and an eCall system which notifies the emergency services if you’re involved in an accident. With the SE L you can add blind spot monitoring for a reasonable price. That trim comes with adaptive cruise control as standard, and it’s optional on the SE.

Reliability

Škoda offers a 3-year, 60,000-mile warranty on the Octavia, which you can extend up to 5 years or 100,000 miles for a premium. It’s worth comparing this to its rival the Toyota Corolla, whose warranty can also be extended for up to 100,000 miles, but up to 10 years as well, as long as you get your car serviced annually at a dealership. Elsewhere, Kia’s warranty leads the class: 7 years or 100,000 miles as standard.
