The Škoda Kodiaq provides ample space, seating for seven passengers, and great engines. Find *your* Kodiaq at Car Planet today!

Is it the best choice for a seven-seat SUV? Skoda has certainly made a strong case, having sold 850,000 units of the first-generation model. The second-generation version aims for similar success, boasting increased space, efficiency, and luxury.

However, there are many large SUVs on the market, including high-end options with premium badges like the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Mercedes GLB. In contrast, the Kodiaq’s aggressive pricing strategy means its starting price is significantly lower than those competitors. It even undercuts the Kia Sorento and is priced similarly to the Peugeot 5008.

Equipment, options and extras

Despite being the entry-level trim, we believe the SE is the best option to choose. Its equipment list closely resembles that of the entry-level Peugeot 5008 and should satisfy most buyers.

Key features include 18-inch alloy wheels, ambient interior lighting, keyless start, three-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, automatic headlights and wipers, power-folding door mirrors, and heated front seats. Additionally, it comes with wireless phone charging, adjustable front lumbar support, smartphone mirroring, and LED headlights.

The SE L trim is also worth considering, as it includes upgrades such as 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, part-faux-leather seats, a powered tailgate, and privacy glass. A Sportline trim will be introduced later, providing buyers with a sportier appearance both inside and out.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

Whether you choose the five-seat or seven-seat version, the Skoda Kodiaq significantly undercuts the Kia Sorento and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Peugeot 5008 is a closer competitor in terms of pricing, while the Citroën C5 Aircross and Seat Tarraco are even more affordable. Fortunately, the Kodiaq retains its value well, making PCP finance costs competitive, especially if you secure the best deal through our new Skoda deals page.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Kodiaq is among the best in the seven-seater category. The 1.5 TSI e-TEC 150 petrol engine can achieve just under 50mpg officially, and the 2.0 TDI 150 diesel has the potential to exceed 50mpg. However, the equivalent engines in the 5008 can officially deliver slightly better fuel efficiency.

Additionally, the 5008’s engines emit slightly less CO2, placing them in lower benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax bands. For company car users, the PHEV variant of the Kodiaq is likely the most cost-effective option, but an electric vehicle would offer even greater tax savings.

Safety and security

In terms of safety features, the Kodiaq is equipped with a comprehensive array of airbags, including front and side airbags for both the driver and passenger, as well as curtain airbags for front and rear protection. It also includes various driver assistance technologies, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), front and rear cross-traffic alert, lane assist, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and a driver fatigue alert system.

Reliability

If anything does go wrong, you’re protected by a three-year/60,000-mile Skoda warranty. While this is decent coverage, it falls short compared to Hyundai's five-year warranty and Kia's seven-year warranty.

The Car Planet verdict

The Skoda Kodiaq is truly one of life's great all-rounders, providing ample space, seating for up to seven passengers, a stylish interior, relatively powerful and efficient engines, and a comfortable ride. With all these features offered at a competitive price, we wholeheartedly recommend including the Kodiaq on your shortlist of seven-seater options.
