The Audi A5 provides a quiet, comfortable and seriously classy driving experience. Find your very own A5 at Car Planet today!

First things first: the Audi A5 isn’t overly concerned with keeping costs down. That means it’s not available with the lower-powered diesel engines you’ll find with the A4, but rather comes with several petrol options: a 148bhp and 261bhp, plus a 201bhp diesel. The mild hybrid technology improves on emissions while introducing a serious performance boost. The more powerful of the petrol engines and the diesel come with four-wheel–drive, while the other petrols stick to front-wheel. But before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s explore the A5’s core stats.

Equipment, options and extras

The Audi A5 comes with LED headlights, three-zone climate control, and a 10in infotainment screen with DAB radio and satnav. The S Line is an appearance package for the most part, including snazzier matrix LED headlights, but unless you’re specifically after a racier aesthetic then you might just want to stick to the entry-level Sport. The range-topping Vorsprung trim adds in pretty much everything you can find on the Audi options list, although we’re not sure it’s worth the significant extra expense.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Audi A5’s is priced roughly in line with its rivals, and its resale value is on a par with that of the Mercedes C-Class—although can’t quite match up to that of the BMW 4 Series. Company car drivers will be interested to know that the A5’s least-polluting engine is the 40 TDI diesel, which comes with four-wheel–drive and unfortunately affects efficiency somewhat. Its 152g/km emission places it in a higher BIK company car tax bracket than the cleanest C-Class and 4 Series. Its fuel economy also falls a little short of its rivals’, with the 40 TDI managing only 49mpg against the C-Class’s 52mpg and 4 Series’ 58mpg.

Safety and security

The Audi A5 comes with automatic emergency braking as standard, although it lacks lane-keeping assistance, whereas its rival the BMW 4 Series includes this as standard. However, if you upgrade to the range-topping Vorsprung trim you’ll get not only lane-keeping assistance but also traffic sign recognition and blind spot monitoring.

The Car Planet verdict

The Audi A5 is one of the quietest and classiest four-seaters in its class and price range, and most certainly boasts the finest finished interior. That being said, that same interior probably isn’t as driver-friendly as that of the BMW 4 Series, and the latter is probably as comfortable and more enjoyable to drive, especially on long distances.
